A 250 kVA machine does not give you 250 kW. The difference between kVA and kW — the power factor — is where most project budgets go wrong.
- kVA × power factor = kW. At 0.8 power factor a 250 kVA set delivers 200 kW
- Motors, pumps and compressors start at 3–6× their running current
- Air conditioning on African construction sites can be 70 % of the connected load
- Always size prime power with 20 % margin, or specify an alternator with a solid overload margin
